Behind The Scenes Of John Legend And The Roots New Music Video [Photos]

John Legend was ultra excited about shooting the video for he and The Roots' new single.

The video is for their new song "Wake Up Everybody" that features Melanie Fiona and Common and is the first single off of The Roots and John's collaborative album Wake Up due in stores September 21, 2010.

The singer tweeted photos from the shoot that took place near downtown Brooklyn earlier today. The weather here in BK was insane. I'm talking thunderstorms and heavy rain but it seems that they all pulled through it.

On set were Questlove, Melanie Fiona, Common and of course John...

Maybe it is the matchmaker in me, but wouldn't Common and Melanie make a great looking couple? Here, let me turn that mental picture into something more concrete...

So adorable.

No word on when the video will premiere.

M.Y's Perfect 10: The Top 10 Fantasy R&B Collaborations

Just like Baseball and Football fanatics, we R&B music lovers have an idea of who we would like to see collaborate together on a song. Now, some have suffered the fate of assuming because two singers are kind of a big deal at the moment that they would be ideal on a track. I, on the other, believe that the secret to a great collaboration relies on the artists’ vocal skills, their overall talent, and appeal. Here are M.Y.’s fantasy collabo picks.

Alicia Keys & John Legend

I have been patiently waiting for these two to get together to pour their hearts out on a track to no avail. So, since they haven’t done it yet here’s a little wish in the sky that they will come to their senses and give the fans what they want. They both play the piano and have soulful sultry voices. I could so see them performing their song during the Grammy’s with their pianos facing one another.

Chrisette Michele & Ryan Leslie

Chrisette Michele’s voice is divine and has that special hint of the classic R&B sound to it. Ryan Leslie is a superb producer/singer/songwriter whose voice is ultra original and classy; this match would be one fit for heaven. Chrisette’s adlibs on their track would be ideal.

Mary J. Blige & Keisha Cole

Some have said that Keisha Cole is like Mary J. Blige when Mary first came out. The similarities are clear; when Mary came out with What’s The 411 she had a style to her similar to an around-the-way girl and so did Keisha when she dropped “I Changed My Mind”, multi-colored hair and all. Eventually, Mary grew into her womanhood emerging as a fabulous Diva and Keisha did the same with a change of attitude and style. Keisha has proven that she can handle her own alongside a strong vocal contender like Monica so I know that Keisha on a track with Mary J. Blige would harmonize well.

Beyonce & Rihanna

Some of you are probably thinking, “Beyonce and Rihanna?” Yes, I would love to see these two on a track together. Yes, Beyonce has the tendency to out sing others even when she’s not trying and Rihanna's vocal stability is not the strongest, but I would be interested in seeing what these two could come up with. Their styles seem to be similar these days; touching on the edgy side of R&B. Plus it would be great to see the Diva’s battle it out Dreamgirls style!

Amerie & Ne-Yo

I have been waiting for a ballad from Amerie for some time now and I think that Ne-Yo can bring it out of her. Besides the fact that he is an amazing songwriter, whenever he is on a track with a female singer he knows how to respect her space, giving her the appropriate leeway to get her voice heard; this was made clear by his duet with Rihanna.

Solange & Melanie Fiona

Melanie Fiona, in my opinion, has one of the most soulful voices in the genre today. Solange oozes soul; would it not make sense to have them on a track together? Solange’s edgy style would mix well with Melanie’s contemporary. Judging by their albums, they both have a fondness for the vintage classics making this duet a must.

Keri Hilson & Maxwell

We all know that anything with Maxwell is alright with us. Keri Hilson has a light and fluffy sound to her and so does Maxwell. Hearing them duet together about love would definitely qualify as baby making music plus their sounds are just too sexy.

John Legend & Ne-Yo

There really is no explanation for this collaboration. John Legend brings the music and Ne-Yo can give the words. This could be a modern day Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder “Ebony and Ivory” but would will be more along the lines of “Chocolate and Cream”.

Ashanti & Trey Songz
Ashanti’s vocal skills have improved a lot over the years. To me, Ashanti could always carry a tune (she just let her nerves get in the way) but according to the general public her voice needed some work. Besides the fact that these two would simply make a cute couple, I think that their voices together would be just as cute. I would be most interested in the video for said fantasy collaboration!

LeToya Luckett & Mario

When I interviewed LeToya a while back, she mentioned that she would not mind doing a duet with Mario. When she first said it I didn’t see the brighter picture but now that I look at it, a duet between the two of them would be pretty cool. A lot of people sleep on Mario’s vocal skills and I could say the same for LeToya. I believe if they hopped on a track together their voices together could make some sweet tunes and garner the attention they deserve.

Who knows, maybe a few of these fantasy collaborations can go on to receive Grammy awards someday; hey, it could happen.

Sunday Kind Of Love: John Legend-Ordinary People

"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart."

This week's Sunday Kind Of Love is brought to you by John Legend and his song "Ordinary People".

This song is the truth on so many levels. It's amazing that this song came off of his first album Get Lifted that ended up being a classic LP.

The song explains one thing and one thing only, love is not a fairytale. Yes, it was nice to read about the prince and the princess living happily ever after but what they left out was how much the prince worked the princess's nerve or when they bumped heads and didn't see eye to eye. That doesn't necessarily mean they don't love each other, they just don't have that so called perfect love.

Love is a roller coaster. There are the ups and then there are the downs. What matters most is how you make-up when you are going through the downs, that is when love is put to the test and is truly built. Happy Sunday!

M.Y. Album Spotlight: John Legend-Get Lifted

John Legend's Get Lifted which was released in 2004, is an album that deserves a spot in every one's CD rack.

Filled with timeless singles and music appropriate for all occasions, Get Lifted was a certified classic album that propelled John's career to the top. This is the type of album that can be played from beginning to end without the need or urge to skip a track.

What was impressive was the fact that this was John's very first album. The very popular "Ordinary People" still plays on the radio and is a favorite among everyone. Notable tracks are "Ordinary People", "Used To Love U", "Number One", and "So High".

Personally, I loved every song on the album but listing them all would be silly when you can just listen to it. Check out the album below.

John Legend sets the NY Post straight! + See how you can too!

Here is an open letter that John Legend wrote to the NY Post that I snagged from Highbrid Nation, in response to their monkey comic that was obviously taken as a disrespect to President Barack Obama and to many of their readers and anti-readers,

Dear Editor:

I’m trying to understand what possible motivation you may have had for publishing that vile cartoon depicting the shooting of the chimpanzee that went crazy. I guess you thought it would be funny to suggest that whomever was responsible for writing the Economic Recovery legislation must have the intelligence and judgment of a deranged, violent chimpanzee, and should be shot to protect the larger community. Really? Did it occur to you that this suggestion would imply a connection between President Barack Obama and the deranged chimpanzee? Did it occur to you that our President has been receiving death threats since early in his candidacy? Did it occur to you that blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery? Did you intend to invoke these painful themes when you printed the cartoon?

If that’s not what you intended, then it was stupid and willfully ignorant of you not to connect these easily connectable dots. If it is what you intended, then you obviously wanted to be grossly provocative, racist and offensive to the sensibilities of most reasonable Americans. Either way, you should not have printed this cartoon, and the fact that you did is truly reprehensible. I can’t imagine what possible justification you have for this. I’ve read your lame statement in response to the outrage you provoked. Shame on you for dodging the real issue and then using the letter as an opportunity to attack Rev. Sharpton. This is not about Rev. Sharpton. It’s about the cartoon being blatantly racist and offensive.

I believe in freedom of speech, and you have every right to print what you want. But freedom of speech still comes with responsibilities and consequences. You are responsible for printing this cartoon, and I hope you experience some real consequences for it. I’m personally boycotting your paper and won’t do any interviews with any of your reporters, and I encourage all of my colleagues in the entertainment business to do so as well. I implore your advertisers to seriously reconsider their business relationships with you as well.

You should print an apology in your paper acknowledging that this cartoon was ignorant, offensive and racist and should not have been printed.

I’m well aware of our country’s history of racism and violence, but I truly believe we are better than this filth. As we attempt to rise above our difficult past and look toward a better future, we don’t need the New York Post to resurrect the images of Jim Crow to deride the new administration and put black folks in our place. Please feel free to criticize and honestly evaluate our new President, but do so without the incendiary images and rhetoric.

Sincerely,
John Legend

I applaud John to the up most extent. Let this be the first step for all Artist/Celebrities a like to use their voices for good and to, I don't know, make a change. Kudos John!

John has taken the lead on a situation that we all need to follow suit with.

If you too were offended by the offensive comic, the time has come for you to let them know that you were not feeling it using that intellect and grace that you have. You can call the Federal Trade Commision @ 1.877.382.4357 to voice your complaint.

And for those of us that reside in the NYC area it is time for us to get acquainted with our Senators shall we. Here are their information:

Side Order: Where is Jay-Z and Beyonce or any other rapper who was partying it up the night of the inauguration? Are they waiting to see what everyone else is going to do first before they make their move like they did when Barack ran for the Democratic nomination? I'm just sayin'...

M.Y. A Sunday Kind Of Love: John Legend-Ordinary People

Valentines Day was yesterday and I know a lot of you are still on your la la love high, so here's another one for the books.

John Legend's "Ordinary People" is one word, the truth. It's the reality of love without the sugar coated joy they sell you in a Hallmark card; the good and the bad wrapped up in a pretty little musical bow.

Yes, the power of music.

John Legend "Everybody Knows"

Here is the new video from John Legend for his single "Everybody Knows" off of his album Evolver.

I love the song and the underlining meaning behind the lyrics and the video is very simple. I love it when John gets sentimental.

I give this video a yummy B+ for having a deeper meaning.

John Legend ft. Andre 3000 "Green Light"

I love love love this video! and forget about the song...its scorching!! John Legend takes a more party tone in his new joint "Green Light" off of his new album entitled Evolver that is due in stores October 28. The video starts off with him singing his infamous ballad "Ordinary People" when he gets frustrated at everyone talking over his mini-performance.

The video featuring the wonderful Andre 3000(I just adore him)combines smooth R&B with upbeat hip-hop a combination that equals a hit. This is very different for the subtle John Legend who usually stays glued behind his piano. It was very refreshing to see him moving and grooving for a change. I wanted to actually be at the party in the video that's how fun it looked lol. The video at the end gives us a preview of one of Legends singles that will appear on his up and coming album that I am so excited about. I have been very pleased with the albums he's released in the past and expect this new album to be all that and then some..don't let me down John.

I give this video a yummy A-.

Check it out!
