M.Y's Tuesday Time Machine: 1972-Still In Love With You

You hear it all the time; they say music just ain't what it use to be. Let's go to 1972....

This song right here is a timeless classic and happens to be a personal favorite of mine. Written by Al Green, Willie Mitchell, and Al Jackson Jr. "Still In Love With You" went on to be one of Al's most popular hits.

The song appeared on an album that shared the same title of the song and sat at the number 1 spot for 2 consecutive weeks on the Hot Soul Singles charts in April of 1972.

M.Y. Tuesday Time Machine: 1991-Summertime

Before Will Smith was the Oscar nominated Thespian and follower of Scientology, he was a Philly breed rapper that went by the name of the Fresh Prince who rapped along side DJ Jazzy Jeff. His claim to fame came via his song "Parents Just Don't Understand", but when Will and Jeff put out "Summertime", I'm sure they had no idea that it would go on to be a classic.

"Summertime" made it's debut in 1991 with a beat that was sampled from Kool & The Gang's song "Summer Madness".

SUMMERTiME - WiLL SMITH

It reached number 1 on Billboards Rap Single and Hot 100 charts. Interestingly enough, it was also considered R&B and spent a week at number 1 on the US R&B charts.

The song speaks for itself and it is sure to bring back childhood memories. All I can think about when I hear "Summertime" is the smell of charcoal from the bbq filling the air, block parties, david sunflower seeds, 10 cent ices, and of course the corner store quarter water (if you don't know about this, you better ask somebody....for real)

M.Y. Tuesday Time Machine: 1978-September

Today we are going back to 1978 when Earth, Wind, and Fire's single "September" first made it's debut. The song was written by Maurice White, Allee Willis, and Al McKay.

September - Earth Wind & Fire

"September" reached number one on the R&B charts and number 8 on Billboard Hot 100.

You can not tell me you do not feel this song. This is true R&B to the up-most power. You know a song is good when it grabs your attention from the very first note. F.Y.I. EWF have been using Auto-Tunes and vocodors before T-Pain was even the apple of his parents eye.

M.Y. Tuesday Time Machine: 1968-You're All I Need To Get By

This song really needs no introduction at all but because I absolutely adore it, I think giving details on its origination is so important and priceless. "You're All I Need To Get By" is a timeless classic performed by the soulful Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

This song was released in July of 1968 and was deemed a summer hit. Written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson (who form the duo Ashford and Simpson) it combines the soothing sounds of R&B with a splash of soul and gospel.

It has been remade by practically everyone including Mary J. Blige and Method Man all the way to the proclaimed Queen of Soul Ms. Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross. The single peaked at number 1 on Billboards Hot Soul Singles in 1968 and remained there for 5 weeks.

*New* M.Y. Tuesday Time Machine: 1981-Before I Let You Go

You hear it all the time from your parents and your grandparents, "music just ain't what it used to be" so for that, we will take a ride back into time every Tuesday to get a glimpse into how music in the past has shaped our interpretation of Hip Hop and R&B today.

Today we will visit 1981 when Frankie Beverly and the Maze band dropped this hit that I'm sure you heard at every friggin party you went to and will probably still get spins at parties today.

Before I Let You Go - Frankie Beverly & Maze

First time I heard this song I was about 6 years old and I was at a party with my aunt (boy did she know how to party). When they popped this baby in the cassette player the house got live and everyone simultaneously shouted "this is my song!". I believe that is the day I fell in love with R&B.

On the charts...
