Women's History Month: Honoring Aaliyah

Whenever a person says Aaliyah's name when speaking of their favorite artists or just about music, you can always count on the fact that a smile will follow after her names rolls off of their tongue.

Aaliyah was an angel to R&B and was the viva la tomboy that every little girl that cursed skirts and barbie dolls needed.

Her sound was original and so was her style. She was practically one of the only R&B artist that was able to marry the sounds of Hip-Hop and R&B in a way that didn't sound forced. Her voice was light and sweet yet she was able to vocally attack a Hip-Hop tinged beat like a shark after it's prey.

M.Y. Honors MC Lyte

I wish I would have thought out this entire tribute to women in Hip Hop and R&B a little better, because this month we didn't get a chance to give tribute to all of the women in Hip Hop and R&B...I guess I'll have to do it in bulk sometime this week because the month is almost over :-(.

Anyhow, let's not rain on the music tribute parade.

This week we are honoring Hip Hop's sister with attitude and immaculate lyrical skill, Ms. MC Lyte.

MC Lyte joins Queen Latifah as a female emcee that demanded respect. Her gift with words allowed her to be very communicative through her songs and uplift women all the while earning respect from the male driven genre of Hip Hop. She earned herself the tittle as being the first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy Award for her song "Ruff Neck"

The men in Hip Hop had no choice but to give Lyte the respect that she deserved because with little effort she was sick on the mic and would rip anyone that dare take her on to shreds.

My favorites from Lyte are "Poor Georgie" and "Ruff Neck" but this one tops them all...

Lyte as Rock - Mc Lyte

Mc Lyte is an inspiration to all female emcees that dare make their way into Hip Hop and is a queen in more ways than one. She made it quite clear that you could take on the best while middle fingering the rest just by spitting a wicked line on the mic. For that we honor you MC Lyte.

M.Y. Honors Whitney Houston

Before Whitney Houston was engorged by the media and turned into what many would view as a mess, Whitney was America's sweetheart.

She exploded on the scene like a Newark, NJ atomic bomb with a big voice and bubbly personality. When she first made way into the entertainment business, she was a model with a striking beauty that caught every one's attention. Little did they know at the time, she packed more beauty not only through her face and inner being, but with her voice.

All the man that I need - Whitney Houston

Whitney's voice was so well nourished that it made you think you were listening to a plus size choir leader and not a skinny little misses.

After a hiatus and a funny reality show ~snickers~ Whitney has re-teamed up with her old com padre Tommy Mattola and is preparing to make a comeback on to the scene.
Whitney Houston's music was an inspiration to a lot of the artists that we see before us today and the new artists that will emerge tomorrow. For that, we honor you Whitney Houston.

Musically Yummy honors Queen Latifah

If you don't already know, March is Women's History month and M.Y. wants to celebrate it with a twist. This month I will show appreciation to the women of Hip Hop and R&B.

First chica up for honoring this week is the one and only, Ms. Dana Owens a.k.a. Queen Latifah.

When the queen stepped on the scene she was practically the only female willing to take on the male-driven industry of Hip Hop. Not saying there weren't other female emcee's, but Queen Latifah had a different air about her. Not concerned with using her sexuality to get ahead and known, Latifah's music was more along the lines of "respect the female entity".

U.N.I.T.Y. - Queen Latifah

Thank you for making songs that are female empowering and self-esteem building, and most importantly music we could all connect with.

Adding actress and model/spokeswoman to her resume, Queen Latifah has inspired and has become a hero to many young women donning the eye of the tiger to break into the music industry. For that, we honor you Queen Latifah.

On the charts...
