2009 American Music Awards: The Recap

The 2009 American Music Awards premiered last night live from Los Angeles’ Nokia theater and it was a night to remember on so many levels.

The performances were shockingly good.

To be honest, I was expecting to be bored from the beginning to the end. Yes, they had an all-star line-up when it came to performers, but I have gotten hyped up over the advertising of performances before only to place my hinny in front of the TV the day of the show and to turn my TV off in utter disappointment.

As mentioned that wasn’t the case last night.

One of best performances would have to be Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind.” I loved how they opened their number with Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” and jumped right into their song, it was hot. And although the LA Times Blog rated the performance a low grade because, get this, they felt that it was not appropriate to sing an ode to New York in Los Angeles (how childish is that? Are we still geographically challenged? So that is was respectable media looks like) I thought the performance was two degrees away from being a three alarm fire.

Speaking of fires, I loved Lady Gaga’s performance as well. I think that she is a musical genius despite the popular consensus and I love how she is so theatrical with her performances. Sometimes when she performs, I feel like I’m at a stage play.

Janet Jackson did her thing although she appeared to be a little winded and stiff in her dancing. No one makes sweating look fierce like Ms. Jackson.
Alicia’s performance of “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart” was good as well. A bunch of guys on Twitter were knocking Alicia’s personal black spider man, I personally thought the brother was fly. And men say women are catty and jealous ha! Check y’all out.

I wasn’t that crazy about Rihanna’s performance of “Wait Your Turn” and “Hard.” To me, she simply is not a great live performer or singer, she is a little on the boring side. It is worth mentioning that she wore more clothes on stage than she ever did which was great, it is also worth mentioning that she looked like a slimmer female version of the Michelin tire man.

Everyone has been talking about Jennifer Lopez’s performance, an outcome I’m sure she was aiming for but not for the reason that she’s being talked about. She performed her song “Louboutins” and ended up busting her tale in front of a live studio audience and millions of viewers at home. I thought her entrance was hella cool and having Michael Buffer announce her entrance was genius. I just think she got ahead of herself when she decided to leap-off of backs at her age in a new pair of sneakers, what was she thinking?

Whitney Houston did her thing and although it wasn’t the same voice I grew up trying to imitate it was better than her past performances.

The worst performance of the night would have to be the Black Eyed Peas and Adam Lambert. Now, I was totally into it with the Black Eyed Peas I thought their mash-up was pretty of hot, I just couldn’t take Fergie’s screaming, and again what was that?

Then there was Adam, oh little Adam. His screaming caused me to turn the TV off for the night and start working, and you know that’s a problem when you would much rather work than be entertained, he gets a fail for that one and my doctors bill for blowing out my ear drum.

All in all the 2009 American Music Awards was hot. The performances were great and it held a lot of memorable moments like when Jay-Z told 50 Cent to shut his mouth and have a seat...subliminally.

If there was one thing I could take away from the award show to make it better would be the dialogue the presenters have with one another right before they give away an award or present a performance, why do they have to talk again?

The 2009 American Music Awards was the best award show of the year, and they get major kudos for that.
