Confused? No worries, a lot of people are still getting put on to the new monthly holiday started by George W. Bush on May 31st, 2002 *he did something I can admire him for ~gasp~*. Anyhow, as I was sitting here deciding what I would put in this post about Black Music Month, the thought of do people care about music enough to celebrate it all month long came into my mind.
A lot of people, even teens, are really unhappy with the state of music right now. Whether it be Hip-Hop, Pop, R&B or Reggae, everyone has an opinion about how music is today, some good and the majority bad. I'm not sure how music is taken in or how it affects other people but for me it is really my soul's bread and butter.
I can remember having some of the toughest times in life and simply popping in a CD and kissing those troubles goodbye. I listen to it morning, noon, and night and even had a big dose of it when I was still a little energy in my mothers womb (according to her). Music in my family is everything, it allows our get-togethers to be filled with great memories and can truly liven up any event.
Music will always be different as we grow wiser. It won't have the same style and feel as music once had before it was franchised. But the great thing about music is that it never dies. You can discover different facets of music just by looking into the past. If you haven't already, you need to acquaint yourself with Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston (the beginnings), Earth, Wind, And Fire, Billy Holiday, Josephine Baker, Rose Royce, Stevie Wonders, Bob Marley, Roberta Flack, Maxwell, and many many more. The artists that we see today probably would not be around had it not had been the artists before them that paved the way, and like the saying goes; you can't know where you are going if you don't know where you came from.
Music is the universal language of truth so pop in your favorite CD or press play on your Pod and let it unlock those memories that make you feel good. Happy Black Music Month!!
